DIY - Picking the right paint color

With our recently built home from Ryan Homes decorating seems to be taking forever. What we have the hardest time with is picking and then committing to a paint color.  I have painted the rooms for our daughters but that is all. We have so many projects that we would love to do but painting is one of the first on our list. With that being said, Kathleen is back with some great DIY on paint color. Check out this post and hopefully it will inspire!

Expert Tips on How To Select The Right Paint Color

Whenever you consider decorating or repainting of your home,

you need to follow certain rules. Of course, you probably have

your favorite colors for all of the rooms and you secretly hope
to realize your dream project as soon as possible, however,
when selection of paint colors is concerned, you may need a
professional advice.

Some people prefer more conventional atmosphere for their
properties, while other enjoy the latest modernistic in the interior
design. The right paint color will definitely create cozier and
more welcoming atmosphere for your guests and relatives.
Even if you want to play with colors and to show your creative
skills, you can take a look at the following lines and to read
some of the basic expert tips on how to select the right paint
color. This way, you will avoid the disappointment of choosing
an inappropriate color for your walls and you will save up a lot
of money that you will otherwise invest in new paints.

Thanks to this piece of article you will learn more about the right
combination of paint colors and how to make the right choice
when picking a paint color for your rooms. Here are several
basic tips from professional painters London to follow:

Pay attention to the Your Items And Furniture First

You need to consider the items and furniture that already exist
in the room. Look around yourself – the carpets, the artwork
and the upholstery may give you a hint for the selection of the
color. In case the rooms have not been furnished yet, leave
the paint color as a final procedure. Make sure that you will
pick the desired furniture and other decorations and then
combine the paint color with them. It is the easiest decision for
turning your room into a modern and cozy place.

Avoid Trying a Paint Sample Against A White Wall

Examining a paint sample against a white wall is not
appropriate decision because the paint color is usually
affected by the things that surround it. Trying the paint on a
white wall will only make it look darker than it actually is. This
way you risk to choose a paint color that is too light and that
won’t correspond to your expectations.

Try the Paint Samples At Home

The paint colors may look perfectly while you are in the store,
but things can get quite different when you put the color under
the lighting in your rooms. Do not forget to take paint sample
home and to see whether it will fit the atmosphere in the room,
before you apply it on the walls.

Do not Fall For Cliches
You may have heard that picking a neutral color is the wisest
decision when you want to keep a balance in the house,
however, it may be way too boring to have the same paint
color in all the rooms. It is also true that many people pick
white paint color, as it makes the rooms look brighter and vast.
Of course, if you fall for that idea, there is nothing wrong to trust
the white color, just keep in mind that nowadays you have a
wide options when interior design is concerned. You can always
add some modern elements and decorations that will
immediately change the atmosphere there.

These are some of the basic tips that will help you to choose
the right paint color for your home. Make the rooms welcoming
and comfortable by combining the colors that appeal you and
follow the tips mentioned above to be sure that they will fit
perfectly into your rooms.

Teaching Sisters to be friends

I am the mother to two beautiful, funny and kind little girls. They make me smile every single day. They are sisters and friends and so far it has been pretty easy to for their relationships to develop. My baby girl just turned two and my first girl is about to be four. The sound of them laughing while they play or catching them in the middle of a spontaneous hug are some of my favorite moments.

I adore and try to memorize the small things they do for each other. My older daughter will speak for her sister and I can tell that she isn't just guessing, big sister knows what her baby sister needs. She speaks for her and the little one appreciates it. I find it so sweet when once their issue is solved they walk off together and go about their business.

Last week my husband and I were outside with our project manager and the girls had wondered back inside. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my youngest come out of the door, look at me and quickly go back in the house. As I observed this exact same movement three times in a row. I realized something was amiss. I walked up to the deck and into the house to hear my oldest crying out for me. I realized my little was coming to find me because she knew her sister needed some help. No real danger but she did need help with some wiping issues in the bathroom. Her sister knew she needed me and like a tiny sentry she nervously paced back and forth until help was on the way.

My girls have each other's backs!

The relationship between them is so young and blossoming every moment and I can't wait to see where it goes. When they giggle or share affection, I breathe it in and mentally burn it into my memory.  When one does something for the other or when my oldest daughter laughs hilariously at the little one, it makes my heart swell with pride.

How do I foster this relationship? How do I keep them as sisters and friends? How do I keep their connection strong? I know that it seems silly at this age to worry about their relationship but the thing is, I have three sisters.

I love them

We are not friends, only sisters and I have always wanted to be both.

This makes me sad and leaves me lonely for the kind of relationship that other sisters have. I know that all siblings don't have a close relationship and that it doesn't bother them, but to me its everything.

For my girls,  I want something more. I want them to never feel alone, to always have a friend in her sister. When my husband and I are gone, I want them to have each other.

You can be just be Sisters,  but what about the connection that strengthens your bond? Your secret keeper, your champion, your ally in good times and bad. The sister that would defend your honor and fight off your bullies. That is what I want for my girls. It is every single thing that I don't have but constantly wish for.  When you move out of the house, go to college, get married, have kids or when your family goes through a scary time, are your siblings your support?

How do you teach your siblings that they are more than just siblings? What is a favorite moment between your children? How do you foster their relationship with each other? Are you friends with your sisters?

Driveway and Final Grade update

Well, we finally have a driveway. Once they finally poured the concrete (3o days later) we spent the 10 requisite 10 days off the driveway. We have now had a driveway for 20 official days and were told the final grade would be right after that. We are now going on 11 days and no grade.

It is darn near the end of June and our yard is still full of overturned earth, nails from the nail guns and rocks.  Originally when I started tracking my experience I was honestly overjoyed with anticipation and floored by the amazing customer service. But now, I am just emotionally exhausted. Our project manager started out as one of my favorite people at Ryan Homes and now I am not sure how I feel about him at all.

I get it. I understand. Winter work has a deadline of June 30th (per our contract) but I am so tired of the run- around. We have houses on our street that no one has moved into and they have final grades, driveways and exterior paint.  Our house is still just part-way done.

I did not imagine being into the end of June and still have no grade for our yard. I am sorely disappointed in the fact that because Ryan Homes pushed themselves to the deadline that the quality of work on our house has disintegrated. Our project manager is treating us like we ask for something completely crazy when all we want to know is WHEN?

How did we go from the awesome experience to us being almost embarrassed by the lacking state of our outdoors.  We made a mistake by signing without knowing all of the things that come afterward. We had no idea what this would be like once you signed.

Here is my advice: IF you are planning on building then make sure your house will be finished in the summer or fall because if there is work to be done after winter then you will be last in line. After all, you are paying your mortgage and no longer matter to Ryan Homes.  Its on to the next new home, forget that at one time you were a priority.

My daughters will once again go with no  yard for the summer. I have now thrown their birthday party and was actually grateful for the rain. This way I didn't have to explain why we don't have a yard and why it is taking so long.

For those that followed me, you know how much I loved the experience of building and now I am left with a bad taste.  To then be dis-regarded by our project manager was almost too much.

And so we wait again. Our play-set is in our garage and has been for 2 months. This was meant to be their birthday gift and we celebrated on Sunday.  I hope their is another survey to fill out. They stalk you for that 30 day survey and now I know why. After 30 days it is so long, good luck enjoy your dirt pile.

I will do another update when we even have a date for our final grade or the rest of our exterior paint is done?  Your guess is as good as mine...

Learning to swim

I don't remember a time when I didn't know how to swim. We grew up in Arizona and always had a pool in our backyard, I barely remember a time where we used water wings as a swim aide. Water was never somewhere I felt uncomfortable, unsure or unsteady. I remember my sister's and I had the beautiful golden tan of children that play outside and the green hair of blonde kids that spend too much time in chlorinated water. My life as a swimmer eventually brought me to a swim team where I swam for a few years and then into High School where I lettered as a freshman for our swim team. I spent most of my time in a bathing suit. My love for water also was part of some of my first jobs when I decided to become a lifeguard in high school and the first year of college. What college girl wouldn't want to earn her party money by getting a tan outside?

I taught swim lessons to little kids in water wings (floats) and it was one of my most favorite parts of working at the country club. I loved their excitement and how cute they were in their little bathing suits and their little hands holding onto the side. That was 18 years ago and it feels like yesterday. In the blink of an eye. It is a different kind of summer, I am a mommy and my almost four year old daughter has inherited my love of the water. Even as a baby she loved to swim, each year she got older her love of the water increased. There is something magical that happens for me when I switch her into her swimsuit and cover her skin with sunscreen. Something about the way she smells while we our outside, her warm skin, and slightley damp bathing suite brings back the memories like a dream. I want her to remember the same things as I did when I was floating in the pool.

When winter tosses its frozen blanket over our life for the long winters, I find my daughter playing in the sink and running around in her bathing suit. She pretend swims in the tub and has whole days that revolve around pretend swimming. Such is her love for the water, that no change in weather stops my darling girl from getting a little wet. This summer things are different and we don't have a pool in in our new neighborhood but we did buy the requisite hard plastic pool that we put on our deck so our little water bug can play. I realized this year that she has become more and more comfortable with the water and that for her, for us, for the utmost safety we have to get her some swim lessons. I believe in the safety that has to come around water. I know there have been too many innocent children who have accidentally drowned or were in a situation where saving themselves wasn't an option. I know that as careful as my soon to be four year old is around water that there is always the potential for danger. The time has come to teach her how to become an actual swimmer.
Are group lessons the best option or would a one on one class be our best fit? Summer isn't just about fun, summer and splashing in the pool. Its about the look in my daughter's eye when she knows a sunny day is upon us and that we will be filling up her pool for playing.

Until she can swim, even leaving her for a moment with her water wings on is out of the question. Water wings deflate, kids slip and fall below the water and those are the times when a parent would say.." I only turned my back for a minute". Her quite confidence in the water paired with her bravery for try new water tricks has motivated me. My youngest daughter didn't inherit my gene for water and rather hates it. Sister will only stand in the water or reach in from the outside of the pool. So tomorrow I will google for swim lessons, find a club, a teacher, a center or an indoor pool that my baby can learn to swim. I am equally excited and fearful for what comes with the independence of learning to swim.

What age will you teach your child to swim and what options will you choose as your best path? Do you believe the love of water can be passed down?

Share with me and as always, Thank you for stopping by!

The ABC Homeowner's Guide to Plumbing

Kathleen is back with some great advice on plumbing, you can do this on your own making this another great idea for a DIY!

You can see more DIY for your home here, here and here.

Homeowners often forget about the plumbing system of their home until some kind of problem appears. Since almost everything is hidden behind the walls, you can discover the serious damage when it is too late, which could be bad for you. When it comes to plumbing systems, there are some general rules which every homeowner has to know in case of an emergency. Therefore, I prepared a simple guide which includes some tips about coping with complications with the plumbing efficiently and promptly.

The problems with the plumbing system are something normal in the household and that is why it is better to be prepared, in case you have to manage with the things on your own. Undoubtedly, the best way for handling unpleasant complications with your plumbing system is to call a professional. For the complicated problems you will certainly need the help of experienced plumber but with a proper maintenance, you can avoid a lot of troubles. If you want to be able to handle the simple problems and avoid spending money, every time something happens with the plumbing system in your home, you can read the tips below which will prepare you for any situation.

 Make sure that you always have tools – In case of an emergency, you need to have a set of tools which will help you. You don't have to buy complicated ones that you don't know how to use. I assure you that a solid wrench for the pipes, a water meter key for immediate stopping of the water and a plunger will be more than enough for handling the ordinary problems.

 The first thing to do in case of an emergency – Emergencies could happen any time and because of that you always need to know what to do. The first and most important rule is to immediately stop the water by closing the main shutoff valve. This device is usually situated close to the meter which determines the amount of water you use every day. Make sure that you find the location of the main shutoff valve and remember where it is because you will need it.

 How to handle cloggings – We all know that the plunger is an important tool when it comes to cloggings in the toilet or some other place. However, there is another device that can help in situations like these and it is called toilet auger. This is a tool which every plumber uses and which you can get too. The auger can reach any place in your toilet and handle difficult blockages, for which the plunger won't be enough. Your sink can also get clogged very easy and this usually happens when the device is not cleaned properly. By cleaning, I mean the removing of food leftovers and other little parts which can block the pipes and cause very unpleasant problems.

 Inform all family members about the main shutoff valve – This is another important rule which could save you a lot of troubles. You have to make sure that every member of your family knows the location of the main shutoff valve. In case of an emergency you may not be able to get to the device yourself, so another person will have to help you. A problem with the plumbing system could appear even when you are not at home and your kids should know what they have to do.

 Don't forget to inspect the plumbing system – The best way, you can prevent problems and complications with the plumbing system in your home is to make regular inspections. Many people overlook this simple rule and by the time they discover the problem, it is already too late to fix it alone. You have to look for any cracks in the exposed pipes, as well as for any signs of leaks or other problems. It is not necessary to do this each day but at least every few months.

Don't forget to stop by and check out my playroom benches - This is an easy idea you can do quickly and makes a big statement!
